What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a facial rash that occurs mostly in fair-skinned, middle-aged men and women. The cause of Rosacea is unknown.

Usually, rosacea first appears as a flush or a red patch.  The most common symptoms include facial redness and inflammation, in particular around the nose and cheeks.  Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels (telangiectasia) may appear. Left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy (rhinophyma).

Benefits of laser treatment of rosacea

Rosacea often first strikes adults while they are in their prime, thus affecting their social and work life.  Rosacea sufferers have been mistakenly accused of everything from excessive sunbathing to having a drinking problem- all because of this devastating facial skin condition that causes redness and blushing.

If left untreated, rosacea will progress and worsen. The good news is that rosacea can be effectively treated and controlled, and the sooner the better.

Although rosacea can be treated by creams and antibiotics that calm the skin inflammation, the dilated vessels beneath remain.  These can now be treated with laser therapies.

How are lasers used to treat rosacea?

Laser Genesis Skin Therapy is used to gently treat the diffuse, general redness associated with rosacea.

Other laser treatments are used to treat small, red, facial veins (telangiectasia).  These lasers emit specific wavelengths of light targeted at the tiny blood vessels just under the skin’s surface. Heat from the laser’s energy builds in the vessels, making them collapse and disappear.
