What are keloids and why do they develop?
Keloids are thick, puckered, itchy clusters of scar tissue that grow beyond the edges of a wound or incision. They are often red or darker in colour than the surrounding skin. Keloids occur when the body continues to produce the tough, fibrous protein known as collagen after a wound has healed.
Why consider keloid scar removal?
Although keloid scars present no serious health risk, some patients choose to have them removed to alleviate pain, itchiness or tenderness. Others have them removed when the scar limits movement because it is located on a joint. Many patients, however, choose to have keloid scars removed for cosmetic reasons. Depending on the location of the scar, it could cause one to feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Removing it can improve appearance and increase self-confidence.
How are keloids removed?
Keloids are often treated by injecting a steroid medication directly into the scar tissue to reduce redness, itching and burning. In some cases, this will also shrink the scar.
