Any wound that penetrates through the superficial layer of skin (the epidermis) and into the lower layer of skin (the dermis) will cause scarring. However, the severity of the scar often depends on the success of the skin’s repair response — and, in particular, the behaviour of collagen.
Stretch marks are a form of skin scarring commonly associated with sudden growth spurts during puberty or with rapid weight gain due to pregnancy or body building. They form when the dermis – the middle layer of the skin that maintains shape and elasticity – is stretched more than it can tolerate. Connective fibers in the skin eventually break, disrupting collagen production and causing scarring. Both men and women are susceptible to stretch marks, particularly on the thighs, hips, arms, buttocks, abdominal area, and lower back.
Keloids are thick, puckered, itchy clusters of scar tissue that grow beyond the edges of a wound or incision. They are often red or darker in colour than the surrounding skin. Keloids occur when the body continues to produce the tough, fibrous protein known as collagen after a wound has healed.
Acne scars result from the skin’s natural attempt to heal itself. Skin pores that become clogged with dead skin cells slowly fill with excess oil and can allow bacteria to grow resulting in acne lesions. When these lesions rupture, it results in inflammation and damage to the skin’s surface. There are two main types of acne scarring, raised scars and pitted scars. Raised acne scars occur when the skin overproduces collagen in order to repair the skin, while pitted acne scars result when not enough collagen is produced.
Depending on the seriousness of the burn, depth of the injury and injury location, burns can cause hypertrophic, keloid or contracture scars. These scars can sometimes be itchy, raised and restrict movement. Burn scars can be emotionally and physically traumatic. We can reduce the effects with multi-modal burn scar treatment.
