Lip enhancement, also known as lip augmentation, is quickly growing in popularity as a simple, safe way to add volume and definition to the lips. Some people were born with thin lips that almost disappear when they smile. Others wish to “balance out” the top and bottom lips or simply want to improve the shape and definition of their lips which can all be achieved with lip injections.
Many older patients may have had full lips but find that as the years pass their lips are thinning due to the natural aging process. As we age, the lips become thinner and smaller, developing those fine vertical lines around the edges. Full, plump lips are very youthful looking whereas thin lips can be very ageing and give the face a stern look.
Why consider lip injections for lip enhancement?
Lip enhancement with dermal fillers can give you fuller, yet natural-looking, lips after just one treatment. The results are not permanent (typically lasting 3-12 months) which allows you to “try out” a look without committing to a permanent change.
Extra volume to the main body of the lip can be added with lip injections, but can also define the vermillion border of the mouth (redefine and shape the mouth) and can diminish the fine lines of aging. The results can be very natural and subtle or can be more dramatic if that is what is desired.
How is lip enhancement performed?
During the treatment, Hyaluronic Acid Gels, such as Juvéderm™, are injected into the lips by one of our highly-trained and experienced specialists using a very fine needle. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in all living organisms and it is used in dermal fillers with an excellent safety profile. These hyaluronic acid fillers used in lip injections are specifically designed to add natural fullness and to redefine shape.
Dermal filler injections are an outpatient procedure providing immediate results with little or no bruising and swelling, although some patients are more prone to bruising. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and you can return to your regular activities immediately after your appointment.
